Why 2026 is the year we started conversing with AI in retail

For so many years, the sound of PA systems was synonymous with brick-and-mortar retail stores. PA systems and the sound of sales associates shouting to a colleague across the shop floor - “What’s our returns policy after 30 days?” and “What are the best lactose-free milk alternatives?”
As time went on, technology evolved and retailers modernised. We saw the adoption of walkie-talkies and mobile devices across our most frequented stores, improving the experience for customers who no longer had to hear constant information requests made by team members.
However, while useful for faster communication, security and colleague coordination, these devices play messages out loud, creating a noisy shopping (and working) environment. This type of open-channel broadcasting can quickly become clogged up with all sorts of chatter - questions, manager requests, alerts and more. This can interrupt entire teams, pulling focus, distracting colleagues and even disrupting customer interactions.
Enter Artificial Intelligence
Our recent report found that 89% of retailers believe AI is critical for the future of brick-and-mortar retail. Just under a quarter (23%) of retailers are already using AI with the intention of enhancing the customer experience, with 70% planning to.
So, as we cross the midway point of 2026, it comes as no surprise that the retail industry is undergoing a massive shift when it comes to AI.
Brands are moving on from disjointed experimental features, instead harnessing AI platforms to turn huge amounts of data into actionable insights, delivered directly to colleagues via digital communication headsets. Retailers are casting aside their dated walkie-talkies in favour of modern and discreet earpieces, bolstered by digital assistants, turning their stores into connected, data-driven environments.
Arguably, one of the most significant impacts of this shift is enabling colleagues to move from disruptive ‘broadcasting’ to direct, voice-enabled conversations with AI, translating a store’s data intelligence into actionable insights. The possibilities for these insights are extensive, encompassing everything from simple stock queries and specialist product advice to real-time training and guidance for in-store colleagues.
The Benefits of Conversational AI
Not only does the ability to converse with AI protect team focus and reduce the cognitive load, but it can also vastly improve the speed and accuracy of data sharing.
Broadcasting often relies on human memory, the availability of a manager or senior staff member, and the time it takes for a colleague to check stock levels before relaying the correct message. And we know the impact that this can have on customers. Half (50%) of shoppers say they have put a product back on the shelf because a staff member was unable to answer their question about it, while unhelpful service from colleagues is what 52% of shoppers say will stop them from returning to a store altogether.
In comparison, audible AI provides live and accurate data, delivered to the colleague’s headset in seconds.
This can drastically reduce the cognitive load on wider teams and keep communication clear for high-value information. It also allows colleagues to deliver a seamless customer experience; staff remain present and engaged with shoppers, briefly pausing to ask a question and providing a relevant, accurate answer almost instantly.
What’s more, there’s no need for additional hardware or complicated training. Conversing with AI is accessible and available at the push of a button, replicating interactions many of us are used to, thanks to the likes of Siri or Amazon’s Alexa.
Finally, AI insights delivered via headsets have huge benefits for new colleagues who are training in retail stores. Headsets are a valuable tool for on-the-job training and development, allowing new starters to learn from experienced members of staff. However, with audible AI, retail workers have access to more knowledge than ever before, bringing data-led insights into real-world scenarios.
Bringing Conversational AI to Life
At VoCoVo, decades of working with leading retailers have given us a real understanding of what colleagues need to do their best work. This is why we have created an innovative solution that informs and empowers staff, leveraging AI to work for the people on the frontline of retail.
We recently launched the VoCoVo AI Gateway, giving retailers the power to create their own digital assistants. By securely integrating a retailer’s existing AI directly into the VoCoVo ecosystem, simple queries that would have previously disrupted entire teams become one-to-one. Colleagues are empowered with AI-driven insights delivered in real-time through their headset, making access to AI as simple and intuitive as speaking and listening.
Conclusion
Gone are the days when retailer data is hidden from those on the front lines. The future of retail is informed, connected, and now, conversational.
By replacing colleague ‘broadcasting’ with data-driven, one-to-one audible AI conversations, retailers can quietly yet fundamentally upgrade their day-to-day operations. Teams are empowered and focused, while customers receive instant, expert answers without losing that all-important human connection.
